Salary: Starting salary is £35,359 per annum or exceptionally
up to £38,390 if the candidate can demonstrate exceptional skills
and experience

To drive forwards our ambitious plans, we are looking for a Governance and Legal Officer with relentless energy who can support the organisation.

The prime focus of the role is to support the Director of Governance & Legal Services with the development and management of World Animal Protection’s governance structures, practices and processes, to coordinate governance activities and to provide and/or coordinate the provision of legal advice for the International office, the UK and other country offices as required. The post holder will join a small but busy Governance and Legal Services team.

What will you be doing?
• You will be accountable for the smooth running of the day-to-day governance and legal services functions.
• Managing governance processes and supporting trustees to discharge their statutory duties by ensuring effective governance operations on a day to day basis.
• Triaging legal issues, providing advice in line with the grade and experience of the role holder and escalating matters when required.
• Managing all governance and legal service administration, ensuring the highest standards are applied in line with legal and regulatory requirements.

Who are we looking for?
• Relevant and extensive experience in a governance and/ or legal role in a similarly complex organisation.
• Significant experience of performing the role of secretary to a governing body or a committee.
• Understanding of the principles of good governance.
• Working knowledge of UK Company and Charity legislation or public sector legislation.
• Experience of reviewing and drafting contracts subject to the law of England and Wales).
• Experience of filing statutory reports and returns.
• Holds the interpersonal skills and confidence to deal with people in senior positions internally and externally and to drive progress against agreed actions in order to meet deadlines.
• Able to research and write clear, concise reports at a senior level.
• Able to analyse relatively complex problems and issues and present solutions.
• Able to work on own initiative and as part of a small team.
• Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
